Today, I stand ready. Someone's life depends on it.

Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist

You won't find a more rewarding career than the one you can build at UMMC. Here, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) are an integral part of our world-class multidisciplinary team. You'll work shoulder-to-shoulder with the best...see diverse clinical challenges...and utilize the kind of cutting-edge resources you'd expect from one of the nation's clinical and research leaders. There's no atmosphere more dynamic in which to practice.

Whether you're a new graduate nurse or seasoned professional, you'll be supported and encouraged to take your practice to new levels of excellence. We practice a "team approach" to anesthesia delivery-a collaborative effort between CRNAs and a supervising anesthesiologist-in which you'll be empowered to oversee all aspects of patient care before, during and after surgical procedures.

CRNAs at UMMC have their choice of two distinctive environments in which to work: the General Operating Room (GOR) and Shock Trauma Center (STC).

The General Operating Room (GOR) is a 24-bed OR that averages 13,000 anesthetics a year. Here, we rely on our talented Nurse Anesthetists to provide anesthesia for all types of surgical procedures, including Plastics, Vascular, Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, Transplant, ENT, Ophthalmology, Urology, GYN, Thoracic and General Surgery. Any and all procedures related to the anesthetic plan are performed by our Nurse Anesthetists. A multidisciplinary team of nurses, surgeons and anesthesia providers, work together to provide each patient a high-quality and safe operating room experience.

At the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center (known as the STC), our Nurse Anesthetists are among the only group in the country with a practice focused specifically on traumatic injury and the critically ill. This is the world's first and foremost Trauma facility, and the cornerstone of Maryland's EMS Trauma system. You'll be part of an internationally acclaimed team that is literally changing the course of shock trauma care, each and every day. We train the world in state-of-the-art shock trauma methodologies and techniques. In fact, we offer the kind of educational resources that attract Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists and other healthcare professionals, students and observers from around the world.

Here, you can really feel free to explore new opportunities to take your skills and knowledge further, and create a nursing career with tremendous impact. To learn more, visit our dedicated Anesthesia department page.
